Magnum

Magnum
The photographic news agency Magnum was formed as an international cooperative in 1947 by the Hungarian Robert Capa (a pseudonym of Andre Friedman), the Frenchman Henri Cartier-Bresson, the Swiss Werner Bischof and the American David ‘Chim’ Seymour. The agency supplied news photographs to publications around the world. Eve Arnold joined the collective early on, when the agency spotted one of her photographs in London’s Picture Post. The style the agency has tended to encourage is that of the original members: realistic, non-voyeuristic photojournalism, influenced by Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, integrating personal drama with action in spontaneous yet carefully composed photos such as Capa’s ‘Moment of Death (of a Loyalist Soldier)’ (1936).
